Hi All,
I am looking for a hosting service that will give me more bandwidth, SSH access, drupal friendly and more important Digg/Slashdot effect friendly. This is going to be an open-source project so people will be tempted to download more and since it is a service kind - it requires lots of processing and bandwidth (We donot want to use sourceforge - as it is going to be a service kind of app - ie the app will require constant communication with server tool for processing)
If you know any such host/ any hosting service that will sponsor such projects - please let me know i here.
TIA.
(BTW: I tried Site5's $5 - seems like they offer verylow CPU utilization that will lead to slow/no processing of the pages with there is a digg effect - even the site5.com itself was not available when the hit Digg after the $5 announcement)
(Considering DreamHost - but they recommend to take a dedicated server - which comes to like $395/mo :( )
Comments
BTW: Where is Drpal.org hosted??
Just was curious where is Drupal.org hosted with?
My site would require only 25 - 50% of bandwidth and processing what Drupal.org is currently handling (an estimate only)
Regards.

http://osuosl.org/ is open source project host
But they donot provide rot
But they donot provide rot access to install and run services - same as Sourceforge.
I am particularly looking to host with a hoster that would offer me root access.
Thanks for your reply.

Anyone using Grid System from Media Temple - how is it is it compatible with Drupal?
Suggestions and comments are welcome.

I bet that is frequently asked

Since I read from other
Since I read from other place that it is enabled only on request - I made that post. Seems like MT has modified it now to enable SSH from control panel itself.
Any clues on whether it is full root access that I can install software? or limited SSH functionality.
Regards.

drop them a mail
Why not drop them a mail - I'm sure they'd be happy to answer any pre-sales questions.

I did mail them - but their
I did mail them - but their Grid Server currently offers 1TB storage and seems like they bill $1.28 per GB on over-usage of bandwidth - this part turns me down. They do allow full root access.
Me planning to host the site (drupal) on MT and forum(phpBB), downloads on other cheap server like DreamHost/other. My best estimate is that I will be requiring at least 2TB bandwidth - but with a reliable host like MT, dreamhost seems to be unstable (atleast in past 1 month they had like 3 down times)
Is it possible to integrate drupal and phpBB when they operate on different locations?

Bandwidth or data transfer?
$1.28 per GB on over usage on bandwidth? Where did you see that?
From what I can tell they are using a new concept called GPU which takes an overall consideration of usage of CPU, bandwidth etc.
It sounds like a good concept to deal with bursts of heavy traffic - you would need to pay A LOT more for a dedicated server that would allow you the same performance.
The 1TB is 'short-path bandwidth' not storage. You get 100GB storage per account.
The 2TB bandwidth you are looking for sounds more like data transfer? For the download files?
It looks like you get an email if your 24 hour usage is on course to hit your months allocated usage of GPU's so you can do something about it.
What do you want for $20 month!
If your anticipated demands are realistic it looks like you should be getting some proper advice on this.
Good luck.
Hi, I was referring to the
Hi,
I was referring to the bandwidth - the limit is 1TB/mo and when more people seems to access or download more stuff from your site (in my case they will) - you can easily exceed the 1TB limit. All hosts have some actions on excess usage - some block the site and display that 'Site has ran out of quota' - otehr just keep silent and charge for over usage.
Sites like MT, Dreamhost, Site5 all charge for over-usage of bandwidth. Typical charges are something like $0.2 - $0.5 at most places per excess GB of bandwidth used. But MT in their mail from customer service indicated that they charge $1.28 per GB of excess bandwidth usage.
I didn't mean 100GB of storage space - that is really a lot space for me.
Yes, since I will offer file downloads, say like 4MB file is downloaded by 10,000 people and suppose I have 10 such files, then 4MB*10*10000 =400GB transfers (rough calculations), suppose due to viral effect if the number of users exceed - then I except to have 2TB of transfer. (I am also working on alternative ways to host these files so that my server data transfer load is relieved)
Thanks for your suggestions and I have just decided to go with MT GS plan (to host Drupal). I was just thinking in case is it possible to have a phpBB forum installed on some other server like Dreamhost (which can effectively handle phpBB) and both sharing he same user database?

I signed up with MediaTemple
I signed up with MediaTemple two months ago (GridServer) and while there were a few issues on the server side, installing Drupal was as easy as pie with the one-click (and it has run reliably - including 5.0b1). For $20, they offer a huge amount: 100GB of storage, 1TB of bandwidth usage (into which they don't include wget) - but most importantly to me - unlimited domains (all the sites below run off it) and SSH access with php.ini control. You can also choose PHP5 or 4 by site.
Now the big question is, if they can ramp up their servers to live up to their promise? The sites are often sluggish and there were two significant outages in the last month and a half. They are about to release a 1.1 version of their server system which promises to fix these things so we will have to see. I'd say they're great for somebody like me with a number of low-volume, low-critical sites. I can live with the occasional slowdown or outage in exchange for the other features and if they ever make it as good as they keep promising then it will be a spectacularly attractive deal. I will update everyone if/when that happens. Right now I can only recommend them with caveats.

My experience with MT
I'd be interested to hear if the service improves.
I currently have a dedicated virtual with them which seems expensive compared to what would seem like ultra-high performance from the GS. The server software on the DV is outdated (can't run drupal) and they don't offer upgrades as a service. They do offer articles for DV owners to upgrade PHP/MySQL which thankfully was easy enough to follow. The GS would seem like the best of both worlds, falling between shared server and dedicated, requiring management.
I know you say you can handle the occasional slowdown or outage, but as you say it doesn't really live up to their promise.

Yes, at the moment, it does
Yes, at the moment, it does not. They just upgraded their Grid software to 1.1 and it made the sites a little faster but still slow - particularly the first time, they load. All the sites below are hosted on MT, check them out to get a sense of the speed. They are Drupal 4.7, WordPress 2.0, Wordpress 2.0, Drupal 5.0 respectively.

You can look at this
You can have a look at our server. I have made a post here:

Each Xen slot is a full root access and we do have lot of resources.
