In a multi-site installation, where several other sites were having zero problems with Plugin Manager, one of the sites would display this error whenever trying to update modules:

Neither the tar executable nor the Archive/Tar package could be located.

And would not update the modules that were downloaded. Obviously the above was incorrect, but something in that website's database was not configured properly for it to use Plugin Manager.

De-installing and re-installing the module seems to have cleared the error and Plugin Manager performed as expected.

Title: Misleading Error Message? » Add Archive/Tar to plugin manager
Component: User interface » Code
Category: bug » task

Since Archive/Tar is now being included with Drupal 7 by default, I see no reason for us not to take that file and include it here, removing the need for this error message to even appear.

When I installed this module, the fact of it "is designed to provide an in browser interface to administrators to install modules and themes. It automates the process of downloading a project release, extracting files from it and installing them in their appropriate locations" seemed to me like a great idea.

But it's not what happens, since the lack of tar executable and the Archive/Tar package prevent me from using the module as I would like.

Unfortunately uninstalling and installing the module again did not solve my problem.

Thus, I understand that if there isn't enough information on the operation of the module, or parts missing for the proper execution of the same, we have a bug to report.

How can we solve this?
