What is the fallback behavior here?

Will it create the node reference and goto the edit page of the node being referenced?

I think popups are great on the desktop but what is the fallback for mobile devices etc. Can I choose when to implement a popup? For example, using browsecap I can see if a person is on their mobile device, I might want to deactivate modalframe and use whatever the fallback mechanism is.
