When the user resizes the inserted image in the editor and submits page change, it would be great if a copy of the original uploaded image was created at the size set by the user in the editor and linked. The benefit this has is that the image file size is reduced leading to quicker page load times but the user can still go back in and enlarge the picture without having to upload a bigger version.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind this feature too. Saves me loosing the original, or having to re-upload everything if I change the design of my site and want slightly different image dimensions.
