Title:Change CVS user name when moving to Git» Respond here if you want your CVS username changed when moving to Git

Also, my username will be JoshTheGeek, and mikey_p, your's is already in there.

#3

Yeah! Finally! Current CVS user is 'qpqp' would like to change to 'betarobot'. D.o. UID 920.

Thanks!

#4

Current CVS user 'nicki' would like to change to 'nschloe'. Where do I find my UID?
Thanks!

#5

the space & ζ in my user name seems to cause problems in other contexts; irc etc. My cvs name is just ‘zeta’ (although there are users called Zeta and zeta) which is fine for git as well. My no-reply email address has an underscore, if that could be removed I would be very :-)

#6

Please change my username (for uid 35369) to "svendecabooter".

Thanks a lot!

#7

My CVS username was jaywiseman - It'd be good if it could be changed to instanceofjamie?

Thanks :-)

#8

PLEASE LOOK AT THIS:

http://drupal.org/node/1037478#comment-3991442

Shouldn't this announcement also go in a newsletter to the Maintainer news list? It's supposed to go to everyone who has a CVS account, and not everyone checks the forums regularly, nor monitors the latest news via RSS. (Ahem.)

#9

My current CSV username is "nunoveloso18" and I'd like it to simply become "nunoveloso".

All thanks!

#10

My CVS username currently is: 'gjmjr', which I'd like to be changed to 'mo6'. Thanks.

#11

@aspilicious - yeah, we're gonna send out a notification to the maintainers list, too. That was actually the original plan, somehow it fell off radar recently. Thanks!

@zeta - we'll see if we can't get rid of the underscore - note that if you're planning on using a real email address there, though (which we DO recommend), then the underscore doesn't matter in the slightest. The only thing that's actually used to identify you is the uid after the @, everything to the left of @ is just noise.

#12

JohnKarahalis => john.karahalis

Also, has anyone considered requiring the d.o and git usernames to be identical?

Thanks!

#13

sleepcamel => bradweikel

Thanks!

#14

tdrycker => twom

thx!

#15

thanks sdboyer,

having not used git yet, I remain unconvinced about the e-mail id issue. …@uid.*.drupal.org seems unique to me, to me o_O Will it cause any issues in the future?

#16

dbabbage => babbage
d.o UID 270434

Thanks!

#17

nschloe: If you click on your username, it's the part after drupal.org/user/

#18

zeta: Your username after tggm will be your cvs username, unless you ask to get it changed here. (No underscore will be in your git username.)

Merci beaucoup!

#25

Alright, so:

nicki => nschloe

for UID 384214. Thanks!

#26

Michelle: Caps are allowed, so you will be Michelle post tggm.

#27

Done up to #26

#28

Awesome, thanks! :)

@zeta - no, using the anonymized address won't cause any problems in the future. Not any technical ones, anyway. Once you've settled in with git, It might cause you some frustration that you didn't use a real email, since that's what most people do. But nothing more than that annoyance.

@john.karahalis - yes, having the d.o username and the Git username be one and the same was the plan up until very recently. See #1034634: Create a 'Git username' for use in git operations and url aliases for a more detailed explanation, but basically, it's because imagine how much Gábor's life would suck with URLs like this: git@git.drupal.org:sandbox/G%C3%A1bor%20Hojtsy/1234567.git

For those curious, these are getting hardcoded into the migration scripts, committed by me, and pushed to http://github.com/JoshTheGeek/drupalorg-git . The pull request is at https://github.com/sdboyer/drupalorg-git/pull/13.

Will the username be shown anywhere, or is it merely for SSH login purposes? (Trying to decide whether to keep "freso" or switch to "Freso"... :))

#40

Freso: just for ssh.

@svendecabooter - you appear to have two accounts which are approved for CVS, and already use the CVS username 'svendecabooter' for your other account - uid 159925. It seems like what you want is to move the svendecabooter username over to your 35369 account. Which is a reasonable request - but not what this issue is for. Git usernames are unique, and we enforce that on the database field with a unique key index. We use the list generated by this issue to run a query that looks like this:

db_query("UPDATE {users} SET git_username = '%s' WHERE uid = %d", 'svendecabooter', 35369)

MySQL isn't happy about that when the data looks like this to start with:

git_dev@db3-vip.drupal.org::[5.1.44b-MariaDB-mariadb78-log] (DB: git_dev)> select uid, name, git_username from users where uid in (35369, 159925);
+--------+----------------+----------------+
| uid    | name           | git_username   |
+--------+----------------+----------------+
|  35369 | svendecabooter | xeniox           |
| 159925 | sdecabooter    | svendecabooter |
+--------+----------------+----------------+
2 rows in set (0.00 sec)

I'm going through this long explanation to make a point - I/we are taking these requests very seriously, and are integrating them as part of our build process. So when you misuse this issue and try to slide something by like this, it actually breaks the build. Which keeps me from going to bed, and makes me very cranky. Yes, I should do more user input validation - I was naive not to, and am doing such validation now - but please, be careful about the information you post here. Fifteen seconds of additional clear communication from you saves the already seriously overtaxed git migration team potentially hours of anguish. This particular problem played a significant role in today's build instability, which had the effect of pushing off opening for testing.

#65

Note to all - I relented, and we're allowing periods. [A-Za-z0-9._-].

#66

current (cvs): simon
new (git): singularo - same as drupal.org account

#67

@Josh - I just read sdboyer's #65. Does that mean that #41 no longer applies and my original request in #12 can now be met?

Thanks!

@tim.plunkett: posts above state that periods/fullstops cannot appear in git usernames.

Edit: Whoops rules changed mid-stream... Carry on!

#83

@babbage: Actually, they can. If you read the latest post up above by sdboyer, you will notice that periods are indeed allowed in git usernames.

#84

I have an existing github account for aaronwinborn, so have already configured the global name on my local to that. However, my d.o & cvs usernames are both aaron. In an ideal world, I'd like to keep them both. However, to save myself the headaches involved with maintaining two separate git usernames, I suppose (unless someone knows of a relatively easy way to configure git to readily use both):

[edit: ignore this request!!!]

Thanks!

#85

@aaron - the 'Git username' we're talking about here is used for exactly two things, and two things only:

  • The SSH username you'll use to auth to d.o for cloning/pushing git repos, e.g. when I push to ctools, sdboyer@git.drupal.org:project/ctools.git. Of course, I'll be using key-based auth, so I can just use git@git.drupal.org:project/ctools.git.
  • The string used for generating your namespaced sandboxes, e.g. http://drupal.org/sandbox/sdboyer/[blahblah].git

It has nothing whatsoever to do with Git's internal username that's attached to your commits - that which is set by the following command:

git config --global user.name 'Sam Boyer'

I know this is confusing and weird, and I wish we'd figured out a way to make all these separate pieces clearer. Unfortunately, in the abstract, they aren't. However, I think you'll figure them out VERY quickly if you give git-dev.drupal.org a try, once we reopen it.

Hear that everybody? USE THE TESTING SITE. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN A COUPLE WEEKS. I'm not gonna be very patient with post-launch requests that could have _easily_ been addressed by taking fifteen minutes to poke around the test site. http://git-dev.drupal.org (it may or may not be open - watch @DrupalGitGremln on twitter for opening/closing announcements.)

:)

#86

awesome, thanks, @sdboyer! in which case, please ignore #84; my CVS and git username should remain the same.

thanks!
