Php Code to trigger taking a snaphot...

I want to have a new snapshot taken each time the cron runs.
Im planning to use a scheduled Rule, which will use php code to do that.

My question is...
1) Is there a better way to do it?
2) If not, what would be that Php code, to let me to take the snapshot?
