I know that the description states that the node is not unpublished after the timer expires, but is there a way that it CAN be unpublished?

I would like to know the answer to this question as well, having it auto-unpublish products after expiration would be a very nice feature.

I suppose there really is no reason why this feature couldn't be added as an option. Are there others interested in this as well?
