hi

I am a total newbie to Drupal. However, I can do some programming using LAMP, HTML and CSS if required. I am trying to build a MySpace like community site. I need advise on how to go about building such a site. What modules do I need to use and how can I customize the default Drupal configuration?

Please let me know if Drupal is not the right tool for this job. In such a case, please suggest alternatives.

Thanks for your advise and suggestions/recommendations.

Thanks
VSR

It all depends on time. If you have an unlimited amount of time to get to grips with drupal, its theme engine, its module system, its api, its node structure and hook systems then you will do fine.

Theres a social networking group on g.d.o if you want to get involved and contribute ideas.

Else you might be better off with ready made products that will already put you in the right path. Google "phpfox" and see what you find.

Yes, I am willing to put in time and willing to learn the things. I just need to know how to get started and go about doing it. Is there a cook-book on how to build a site like Myspace i.e. a cook-book on the modules/themes/apis required? I went to g.d.o but didn't find much information for starters.

Thanks

You might want to check out the Drupal-Dojo group. Its more aimed at people who want to understand how Drupal works.

Permission to speak freely? Yes? Thank you, sir.
Guy, you want a sandwich [already made] with all the necessary toppings on top of it, you want it hot, with pepper, soda [personal preference], a napkin, a table, a reasonable amount of time to eat it, and the best part - FREE! Guy, no offense, but it just doesn't work this way...

The initial question was posted in two different forums, each with its own comments, might be of interest to others finding this thread to see the comments on the other one:
