I have the same problem only with normal image and file fields.

There were issues with previous versions that have been already fixed. However, you may have old data in your fields (from that previous versions).

I'd need to know whether it still happens with a 'fresh' clean i18n install (not sites that have had previous versions installed)

Is there a solution / available fix for those of us then that have upgraded from 6.x?

the problem exists with a clean installation of 7.x-1.0-beta5

In a clean installation of 7.x-1.x-dev (2011-May-23), it works
