Any idea why? Tested it in other themes, works fine. Was something strange done to the pager?

It was the views-view.tpl that comes with adaptive theme, get rid of it and infinite scroll works.

I'm using 7.x-2.3, there is no views-view.tpl, but the VIews Infinite Scroll is still not working!
