Your best bet is to read the handbooks, particularly the installation and configuration one http://drupal.org/node/258 There are also a few webcasts available in the handbooks to provide a visual guide

I'm pretty new to drupal myself and i've found that the drupal site itself is a major resource. I think that a few drupal books have also been written, so you might want to look into buying a copy as I think they should give a good drill down on the basics. Personally, I've also been trying to keep up with the happenings over at the Dojo, http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-dojo . I think its definately worth a visit, you might find a lot of it to be over your head (or maybe its just me), but I find that it gives a good insight into how you should be thinking when approaching development with Drupal. The best bit about the Dojo is that they make screencasts, so you can try to visually learn.

I don't think i would recommend the dojo - it sounds like he just needs some help and direction and getting drupal configured and running a site. He didn't mention wanted to learn how to code and i wouldn't want to send the dojo someone with the wrong intentions

Point noted Ryan, I agree that if he's looking for a non-coding approach the docs are the best way to approach things.. As an aside, I vaguely remember viewing a video file on how to setup drupal, it was only about 10 - 15 minutes long.. if the link turns up i'll add it to this page... I think it was on youtube

Some of these may help.

The front page of the drupal site currently has a link to an intro video: http://drupal.org/node/112348

The folks over at LullaBot have a few audio and video presentations and podcasts.

The folks over at duder town have some how to videos: http://dudertown.com/howto_classes

And the drupal site has pointers to a few videos, although I think that these may be the lullabots one.

Hope these help get you started.
