It took me a while, but I managed to zero in on the Field Permissions Module as the one causing my development site to crash IE8 (when IE8 is not in compatibility mode). My site looks and works fine in Safari, Chrome and Firefox in both Win XP and on the Mac with OS-X 10.6.7. Try to look at with IE8 and IE8 crashes. (Try it yourself at http://epi.interlinkwebworks.com/node/add/j1.) I came to this conclusion by setting the default theme to Garland and removing modules one by one until I narrowed it down to Field Permissions. Now, I only need to enable Field Permissions to cause the crash in IE8. I've attached a list of enabled modules on the site.
I sure do need this to work. Any suggestions about what I might be doing wrong are greatly appreciated!

joeebel commentedI found several asymmetrical Pre and Post markup fields in the Form Markup sections of the variables. For example:
This was 'leftover debris' from earlier attempts at modifying the markup of individual fields. It seems that IE8 is not as tolerant of stylesheet screw ups as are the other browsers. So, it's my bad, not the Field Permissions module. I can now continue building my site and can keep on using Field Permissions.
Thanks for the great module and sorry I added to the garbage in the issue queue!!
