Even though they have probably been named 'Handbooks' since inception, I recommend changing the name of the master tab on drupal.org from "Handbooks" to "Documentation." And concurrently, the page title, perhaps to "Documentation handbooks."
Handbooks describe the tool used to make them, or the format (book), or the location (in the handbooks).
Documentation describes their content.
Handbooks are _where_ they are; documentation is _what_ they are.
If I were new to the site, and wanted to know how to do something, I would think "documentation."
Although 'Handbook' also brings to mind 'guide'; I wouldn't name it 'Guidebook' either. When I think of software, I think of "Documentation."
We even call ourselves the "Documentation team."

senpai commentedI both second and third this motion. I cannot begin to count how many times I have stared at the label on that tab and wondered who would actually click on it if they were looking for documentation or support help.
+1 for me.

sepeck commentedWe already have a space problem withthe tabs. Documentation is a much longer word then Handbooks. Not mentioning the thousands of references to handbooks both on d.o. and the web.
Moving to webmasters for discussion there.

karldied commentedTo be clear, while suggesting an update to the primary link tab name:
1. I am _not_ suggesting removing the path alias drupal.org/handbooks; that would break legacy references.
2. I am suggesting changing the page title from "Drupal handbooks" to "Documentation handbooks" to preserve understanding of legacy posts directing people to "the handbooks."
3. An alt tag of "Documentation handbooks" (using the "Description" field at /admin/menu) might also aid #2; I realize that none of the tabs currently have alt tags.
4. A further recommendation would be to create an additional alias of drupal.org/documentation which would point to the same location as drupal.org/handbooks.
Regarding the limited space available for the primary link tabs, I agree. See the issue at http://drupal.org/node/60176. Folding the "Community" tab into the "Support" tab would (1) be dead easy and (2) improve clarity.
sepeck commentedI understood that. However I am not sure that Community and Support mean the same things. The tabs for Community was added after people complained that we had no mention of our international community nor any place for such mention.
karldied commentedAnother case where new users are looking for "documentation":

webchickWell, no. That person found the handbooks just fine, just wanted to know if there was a more definitive resource than the community-maintained documentation. The stuff sepeck's working on would qualify, I think.
If space is the primary concern, one other way to maybe solve this is ditch the tab altogether and use the "Support" tab as a centralized "jump-off" page that lists all the various resources, including the handbooks. That would eliminate the nice one-click nature of getting straight to the docs, however.

webchickActually in reading the full thread, the suggestions at #3 seem to make sense. Except for the term "Documentation handbooks." Um. Ew. That's like saying "Programming development" or something... I'd keep the term just "handbooks"; people are smart, they'll figure it out. :P
Community seems to fit under Support well, and duplicates several of the links. If I came to the site for the first time, I would expect "Community" to either be the forum, or else a page listing all the various developers with bios or whatever.

gábor hojtsyI agree that folding the community and support tabs into one is a good idea. I always wondered what is the difference, and now that I compare them, they are really hugely overlapping. Then renaming the Handbooks tab to "Documentation" is a no-brainer. It is also kind of strange to have the "Contact" tab before the Community tab... I am used to search for a contact tab either at the end of menus or at the bottom of pages.
sepeck commentedDo you have a proposal for how to integrate the two, Community and Support, into one page? I agree there is over lap but the community page was added because of complaints that finding finding 'community' resources was hard and would require editing and word smithing. I haven't had time to do more then glance at it, decide it would take a serious bit of editing and concentrate on more pressing issues.
Adjusted weight on Contact so it now appears on the end.
The argument 'no-brainer' in support of renaming is somewhat lacking in 'weighty' consideration however, now that I am reminded of this request I will consider it again in context of the updates I am currently working on for the documentation pages.
sepeck commentedOk. I spent some time and collapsed the very little content in the Community page into Support. Unpublished the Community page. Re-ordered the menu links.
I shall think more on Documentation vs Handbooks. Maybe just Docs.
senpai commentedDocs++, but only if space is a killer issue. Documentation is far better, because it looks like "Stuff that helps me" in almost any language.
gábor hojtsyGreat that the page merge worked well. I would vote for "Documentation", as it is much more cleaner for foreign language speakers, and also Drupal has a tradition not to abbreviate stuff in the source code, menus, help or documentation.
webchickAlso, now that we're short a tab, we can afford to be verbose here.
sepeck commentedWell, sort of. As it is now in 800x600 it all lines up as originally intended. If you do it as Documentation then it's juuuuust a character to long and wraps the tabs.
I surveyed a few other projects and they use either Docs or something else entirely (i.e. Help). Let me check for alternatives for a few more days before I concede and cave in.
webchickOne character? Rename "Downloads" to "Download" :) I'm not sure that "Download" is a noun, anyway.
webchickFirebug says it works....
senpai commentedIt's a perfect 800 x 600 at what font size? How do you know what all the users are doing with their fonts? For me, it looks fine. Or it doesn't. Depending on whether I have a minimum font size set in my browser.
karldied commented"Community" folded into "Support" in #10.
"Handbooks" tab is now "Documentation"
