I would like to see the ability to place the button in the post footer where most other social networking button modules are placed.

Hi Inifnitee, you can do it from the admin interface.

Are you using the dev version ? The Admin interface looks to you like this ? http://corbacho.info/img/Google_plus_one.png
What you called "the post footer" I think is what in Drupal is known as Node Links, so enable that checkbox.

Also be aware that you can control also the weight to alter the position relative to the node body.
