This feature request does seem to overlap with the User Force Term module and corresponding feature request. http://drupal.org/node/85988

There seems to be an unfilled need for automatic role-based term assignment. Any ideas on which module should be the one to do it?

Thanks for pointing out User Force Term, didn't come accross that one.

Maybe defaults could be merged with TAC or TAC lite?

TaxDef can be used without TAC or TAC lite, so while it could be merged, I would not support it.
