Currently views support is only limited to the image itself.

For extended cases a nodetitle (image-node case) should also be integrated cleanly.

Agree to this one.
We could have a look into directions like

http://drupal.org/project/views_showcase

However, a clean futureproof solution needs some time to implementt.
(And i don't want to add the full slideshow complexity as this module was intended to be much simplified compared to the slideshow one...)
