It has always troubled me that the interaction for changing the date of the Authored on field is so difficult, besides providing a completely blank field the interaction to change the date requires the user to write out the correct date and time. We can improve the interaction for doing this by adding a date picker to this field, which is already supplied by Jquery UI in core.

This would require an accessibility evaluation of the date picker, and possible upstream patches.

There's a sub-module of the http://drupal.org/project/date project. I know this worked in D6, but I don't know the status in the D7 version. Possibly this can be ported to core?
