Frankly, I didn't realise that DS could limit the number of items until I was already testing the field_multiple_limit module and wondered what the mysterious unlabelled text field containing a '#' was.
After I realised it was coming from DS I was quite relieved - one less module required!
(Side note: I love DS so much and how it is becoming such a swiss army knife for all my display and layout requirements!)
However, the issue at hand is that its really not clear what the field is for without hovering the mouse over it for the alt text.
Also, when clicking on the formatter settings gear to the right of some fields, it is placed below the update button.
I'm not sure what the best alternative UI would be, but I have attached a screenshot which shows both the DS field and the equivalent provided by field_multiple_limit in case that is of use at all.

swentel commentedYes, I know this a problem. I've just started a Display Suite on g.d.o where I'm trying to discuss all UI problems that come 'thanks' to DS, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/167374 - the group is a bit of an experiment - so if you like, let's discuss over there and afterwards use this issue for the actual patching.

swentel commentedAdding patch from #1236646: moving fields around is painfully slow when field templates is enabled so I don't forget this.

swentel commentedI've temporarily fixed this issue by setting access to false when formatter settings form is open for any field so it doesn't clutter up the interface. As for the other UI options, discussion is at g.d.o - but limited, seems like people are not *that* annoyed/confused by the setup right now :)
