Getting pager to work

I have tried several settings; however, I cannot get the pager to work. At first I had something like:

previous pause next

Which was good, except there were no links. I went in and tried some other settings, but now that text doesn't even show, nor does anything else related to a pager. I turned off all the settings that were there, but the previous... text never came back.

I just need something that I can style to show up, whether it be "previous" and "next" or "1" and "2" or whatever. I'm going to style them via css to be images of arrows going each way, so the actual text doesn't matter. All that matters is that something be there that has a link with it.

Could someone please help me get the correct settings for the slideshow so that some sort of pager will show? I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need any more information about my setup, please let me know and I can do screenshots, exports, or whatever it is you need. This pager is the last remaining thing I have to get this slideshow up and running.
