The problem is determining the correct profile field type in the hook_form_alter() context. Please have a look at the attached patch.

Please disregard patch from #1 as it doesn't work for new fields. Please have a look at the amended patch.

I was unable to apply this patch (probably my fault). However when I hacked it in, it seemed to fix the problem.
