Chronological order is the obvious solution for date sorts; alphabetical order is the obvious solution for title and author sorts; and alphabetical order is a solution for sorts on the type field, however ...
an alphabetical sort is not necessarily the best way to handle "type" sorts. I suggest adding the ability for the administrator to override the alphabetical sort by type, allowing him/her to weight a set of publication types then sort on that set. With weighting, he/she may move more important types to the top of the list, and less important types down. For instance: with the academic discipline of history, primary sources (personal letters, diaries, etc.) are usually more valuable than contemporary newspaper accounts, which in turn are more valuable than interpretive books written centuries later. It would be helpful to be able to adjust the order of publication types instead of being locked into an alphabetical arrangement.
