I sent out a newsletter which was also a story on our website and the result was the newletter engine spammed my mailing list with multiple copies. After thinking through my steps, there are 4 things that happend that may have contributed to what may be more than one bug:

1) I recently upgraded from Simplenews 1.1 to 1.3.
2) While the newsletter was still in the process of being sent out I noticed a misspelling in the Story. So I "edit"ed the story and saved it. I may have hit the "edit" tab a second time, thought better of making a second change and cancelled the chage.
3) Also, while the first newsletter was being sent out I created a clone of the fixed story, added "Updated:" to the title and sent what I thought would be a second newsletter.
4) I deleted the second, Updated, newletter after I thought the newletter emails had gone out.

I expected the result would be my mailing list would receive 1 of the original newsletters with a single misspelling and a second "Update"d newsletter. Instead, the result is that the original newletter (with a misspelling) was sent out 4 times and the "Update:" newsletter was sent out 2 times. It appears that saving a story while the newletter is spooled up can result in that story being sent 2-4 times?? Did hitting the edit button and canceling a change cause additional newsletters to be sent? Also, did sending a clone of the story result in the original being sent a 3rd or 4th time? and/or did it result in the cloned newsletter being sent more than once? Did deleting the Updated newletter cause the second updated newsletter to be sent out of the first one to be resent a 3rd and 4th time?

I just another newsletter this morning. This time all I did was take the story and select to send the newsletter. No last minute corrections to the story, no second story. This time it sent 2 emails.

What could cause the simplenews system to send two emails instead of one?

I just sent another newletter and same problem, it is sending twice. I checked the email list in mysql and three is only one copy of the email in the DB. This time I created a brand newstory since the last two times I sent the newsletter the storys had already been created but not published. I thought maybe doing the upgrade from 1.1 to 1.3 caused something to go wrong with storys that had already been created.

Can anyone offer a suggestion????

Sending process was much improved with 6.x-2.x.
That's why we have a second major release.

Backup first and try the upgrade. You can always go back if it doesn't work anymore with your backups...

I've upgraded to 2.0-Alpha but when I do a test subscription, this is what the email now looks like:

Why are the tokens not working after upgrading from 1.3 to 2.0?

We have switched to token module.
Check the description below the mail text. Tokens should now be written like [confirm-subscribe-url]

You possibly have modified one of the messages once and have hit save on the admin settings page. Thus simplenews can not switch to the newly provided default messages.

Please change the replacements yourself.

I setup simplenews 2 years ago, and I've done some searches , but embarassingly, I can't figure out how to change the subscription confirmation email. Could you point me in the right direction?

OK. I've upgraded to 2.0-Alpha2 but I still have the same problem! I just sent out a newsletter and it sent out doubles again. Just to recap:

- I have a 700 email address list.
- I upgraded from 1.1 to 1.3 when the problem started
- I upgraded from 1.3 to 2.0-Alpha2 and the problem is still there.
- I've reproduced this problem 4 times now.

I've been through the DB and there are no duplicate emails in the list. Does anyone know under what circumstances would Simplenews send out 2 of the same newsletter, consistently???

I spent an hour last night reviewing the problem. I setup small test email lists. No doubles. So I assumed that somehow my subscription list / original newsletter, was corrupted in the 1.1 to 1.3 upgrade. So I created a new newletter, copied my 700 emails to the new newsletter. This morning I sent out a newletter out to the newly created list. At current count 50% of my list got 1 email the other 50% got two... yet again.

Constant Contact it is I guess...

I am having the same issue with one of my sites. Interestingly enough it is not happening with my other sites that have the exact same Simplenews version (6.x-1.3). I upgraded to 6.x-2.0-alpha2 and that did not fix the problem. It made it worst. I reverted to 6.x-1.3 and while the newsletter works it is still sending duplicate copies. I suspect that the problem is another module that may be interfering. I have not pinned it down yet but any suggestions would be welcome. I need to fix this ASAP.
