I would love to see an additional column in the simplenews_subscriptions table for the http_referrer (the page where the person signed up, since there can be several), and an additional form-field on the mass-subscription page for a campaign name. This way the admins and marketing folks can inspect subscription numbers per source/campaign.

The source field is great and all, but very limited. When a subscription needs to be "confirmed", it overrides the true source.

Just a thought. :)

We won't add tracking features to simplenews.
As tracking / running campaigns is a concept that is a layer over the platform, this is a concept that should be introduced by a specific module.

The drupal architecture is flexible enough to plug that tracking into specific points like registration or (as requested) simplenews subscriptions.

Thus, build an extra module. For simplenews only or even more generic.
We already started once general tracking (ad campaign assignment) of conversion actions, even webform submissions. Contact us if you want to support our development on this kind of super-drupal module. However, we would need funds to push this work around 1..2 week of working time.

Won't fix for simplenews itself.
