PHP Fatal error: Cannot create references to/from string offsets nor overloaded objects

PHP Fatal error: Cannot create references to/from string offsets nor overloaded objects in filefield_paths.module on line 608, referer: http://mysite/admin/content/mailhandler

I am using mail handler to email in content.

I emailed in one picture. The content type has an image field.

When I hit upload the screen went blank.

The image was uploaded

I get the above error in /var/log/apache2/error.log
