I think it would be a good idea to make a homebox page an entity, so that all new D7 entity features can be applied to it.

Not going to happen in this branch. Maybe someday in the (far) future.

also agree this would be a huge benefit - would certainly help in exposing homebox through services api, for other client UI implementations that would use homebox server side logic.
