I have twice experienced installation of modules breaks the site (Commons 2.0

1. 6.x-2.1: Installed Ubercart. Configured successfully. Logged out and back in:
PROBLEMS:
*Front page gone,
*Menu items "home" and "stream" missing;
*Tabs for content types missing from groups (e.g. blogs, discussions, polls, etc.).
*Create content drop-down gone (although its block is still there, but empty).
NOTE: Problems persist through theme changes -- was using environs; switched to origins.

Checked homebox and it had no entries. Home page really is gone.
Found Primary link items "home" and "activity stream" in the Navigation menu -- moved them back and recreated home page.

---More details:

*** The Second Time 6.x-2.1:

Installed Ubercart.
Configured it.
Logged-out and back in.
Front page "not found"
Permissions strange -- had configured contact form before, but it was now "access denied."
Home and stream menu entries gone -- default available for configuration in Navigation menu.
Homebox deleted home (the default home that came with the Commons 2.0 distribution).

worked just fine, I thought, but after logging out and back in got a fatal error (Call to undefined function node_load() in ... details below)

I wanted to add some modules and could not because Drush
wouldn't work on the site -- it said there was an error in
path: /public_html/profiles/drupal_commons/modules/contrib/password_policy/password_policy.module
on line 38, but when I checked and tried to change anything, it didn't
work.

So, I changed it back.

I went to dinner and when I came back, the site was broken with this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function node_load() in
path: /public_html/profiles/drupal_commons/modules/contrib/og_features/og_features.module
on line 615

Tried making a new database and inserting old one into a) a fresh commons 2.0 file system and b) a new database. Result: Same error (line 615).
