Simple new is not sending mails and when I go into content newsletter under sent just a hypen no indication if mail is pending or sent. I am using mime mail for html and SMTP Authentication Support. SMTP module is sending test mail successfully but no joy when sending a newsletter. The watchdog is also not showing any records.

The site was built with D7.8

Can you try when deactivating Mimemail, to try to better target the precise cause ?

I have tried to use simple news without Mime mail but I am still seeing just a hyphen under sent. The SMTP module works fine but simple news is just not sending.

Not sure what you wrote above, can you send a test mail or not?

Did you try with the most recent -dev version? If not, can you update and re-try (Note: We're currently hard working on moving this module towards a stable version which includes moving things in the UI around and removing some hopelessly broken features. So don't be surprised if things look different.

Did you try to send with or without cron? Can you try the other one?

Also, have a look at your simplenews_newsletter and simplenews_mail_spool tables. What's the state in the newsletter table and is something in the mail spool table?

Also, can you try to reproduce this in a clean, new installation with just simplenews installed? Maybe on a different server?

I will try this on a fresh setup with new dev version and give you feedback. I do use cron to send the mail.
I receive a confirmation mail that the SMTP module is working but if I try send a test mail with simple news I never receive the mail, and if I go into content newsletter under sent I see a hyphen.
In D6 you would see a green tick which would indicate that the mail was sent but like I said all I see is a hyphen. I will do some more testing as you requested and get back to you with the results.

Is it possible that you are sending the newsletter on the newsletter list below Find content?

If so, that action is currently not implemented and isn't doing anything. This is will be fixed in #1364884: Send action on newsletter list is not implemented, until then, try the Newsletter tab on the Newsletter node.
