I need a hint how path based meta tags are thought to work. I think I don't get the conept.

E.g. my front page consists of some views blocks. All I see now on the front page is a tab "path based meta tags" that lets me enter a path. But what path? And where do I assign the meta tags?

First, you have to decide which meta tags you want to use. This is done at admin/config/search/metatags_quick (place marks in the Path-based meta tags row).
Then, you don't need to enter path manually when you press on Path-based meta tags link on your homepage, you just type (for example) description and keyword values. Path is filled automatically with the system path of the home page (default is 'node')
