From Scoop to Drupal

kpaul - April 4, 2007 - 02:29

Well, I finally made the plunge and switched Muncie Free Press from Scoop to Drupal. Still working on it, but the users and stories moved over relatively easily. Still working on old comments, but they're not really a priority.

Why'd I switch?

* Drupal community
* Familiarity with the code
* Most of my other sites are using it!
* Finally heard D-Kos is dropping Scoop too.

Other reasons, but those are the basics.

Now, Scoop was great in its day, and is still ok for basic stuff (if you have uber geek knowledge), but the community isn't very active or large. Not knocking it (because, IIRC, Drupal was based a lot on Scoop - or the ideas behind it - i.e. moderation queue, etc...), but it was time to move on.

The one thing it has that I haven't tried to emulate with Drupal yet is a comment rating system where comments could be 'hidden' by users after so many votes... (any ideas??)

Anyway, check it out and let me know what you think.

If you can't see it... you're not missing anything worth looking at anyways.. waste of time.

for your honest opinion. It's not much at the moment, but remember I just moved everything over from another CMS. Keep an eye on us. ;)

For comment moderation and user karma like scoop...

parajeff - May 19, 2007 - 08:29

...try the Simple Karma module that mercmobiliy has just upgraded to 5.x and gotten into CVS. It will allow you to set up "trusted users," bury comments, etc. like Scoop -- but it also offers a lot more.

Also -- Drumm has a Recommended Nodes module that allows a Scoop-like degradation over time for recommendations, a simple web page "Recommend this Diary" block, a list of who recommended it, etc. The only problem is that it hasn't been updated to 5.x yet and Drumm has indicated he doesn't have the time or current need to update it himself. It works a charm in 4.7 and just needs to be patched to bring it up to the current version.

Hope the info is useful.

thanks much

I'd played with the Simple Karma a little. Have come a long way with the site since posting this and would love to have more comments on the layout/design/etc.

Thanks!
kpaul

someone please "patch" it up.

I don't have the PHP knowledge to do it ...
but I could really use it for RVOCE.
