Change the display of the calendar to a taxonomy-sorted date list (like upcoming) but with calendar in block as navigation

I have been trying to achieve this for two days now without success.

What I want is displaying events as a list of items for each day in the main content region with a calendar for navigating through days and months in a block.

Main Content region:

Day of the month (e.g. November 9, 2011)

Taxonomy term
Time of day - Title
Time of day - Title

Taxonomy term
Time of day - Title
Time of day - Title

Block:
Calendar with the days of the month in Calendar view

Problem is when I change the Day display in the Cal_date view, from Format: Calendar/Calendar items to Format: HTML list/Fields, the calendar block does not show the days in which the events take place and loses its navigational function.
