I am having the same problems that were fixed with:

I'm sure I'm using the correct code...my site is requiring I use the SMTP module as well. Would this have anything to do with it? Appologies if this is a support request for the SMTP module...

As far as I can tell, everything is correct here. Please try asking the SMTP module folks. If you find out anything needs changing in forward, please feel free to reopen this.

There's a patch for the SMTP module now that fixes this behavior: http://drupal.org/node/195622
