A optional button for this would be very handy, a la Fusion theme or 'Theme info'.

There already is a checkbox setting in the theme settings and child theme's settings. Could you describe what you're suggesting in more detail?

Sorry for the confusion! The Fusion theme has an option to display a button which toggles the grid overlay using JS - fusionGridMaskToggle at the bottom of its script.js. I found it a great help to be able to toggle the Fusion grid on and off directly on a page during work instead of having to keep the theme settings open. Somewhat in a similar style is devel_themer's "Themer info" button. Thanks for your time.

Thanks. I will look into implementing this at some point. Moving to 2.x branch, as 3.x is focused on HTML5 and will incorporate as much of 2.x as possible.
