I found OD a very useful add-on for the core book module, and I am wondering if there is a way to put the outline child pages functionality in a block.

I'd have to see the functionality mocked up but would gladly review a patch. In the middle of a major push for the distro and this module will get an update prior to launch of the next version but this currently isn't planned.

I too would appreciate having this in a block or view or something - it would be ideal to have OutlineDesigner as a side panel next to the notebooks themselves, replacing the standard notebook navigation outline.

I'll accept patches to add this type of functionality. All new functionality should start in 7 though and be backported to 6 as well.
