no expire time added upon user role change (via rules)

When a user gets a new role via the rules module, the expire time is not added to that user.
To reproduce, I did the following:
Using the flag module I set up a rule that would add a user to a certain role when they flag content. The newly assigned role has a default expiry time of "1 day".
Step 1: Manually adding the role using the user management -> expiry time is shown in the user info -> reverse back to normal user role -> OK
Step 2: Let the user flag content -> Triggers rule that assigns new role -> expiry time is not shown in user info (or database)

Another note: when I try to use the rule action "add expire time to role", I am taken to a blank screen (just the admin toolbar is shown).

This is a vanilla installation + role expire 7.x-1.0-beta2 (+patch from http://drupal.org/node/1293846) + rules 7.x-2.0
