I put a term or two in the box and it appears to search, but nothing is found. Now that the main search box is opened like a node, the SAME terms will find the content. Whazzup?

Have you tried to run cron.php found in #drupal directory? If not, I think you need to run it first. Try to download and use the poormanscron in the 'modules section' if you can't run cron jobs.
