css embed img command causes tiny slideshow image

I'm using fluid design on my site and images are scalable with the css embed img command. When I use views slideshow, the slideshow image shrinks so that it's tiny. I've tried views galleriffic and this doesn't happen. My problem is the front page where I want only the slideshow and no gallery. Another issue, while I'm here, is loading animation. It would be really nice to have loading animation.
