1. Create a taxonomy view with Format = Display suite, view mode = 'Taxonomy term page'
2. Create any DS template for 'Taxonomy term page'
3. Add Description field into there.
4. Open the view.
5. No Descriptions or other text fields.

I'm experiencing the same behavior, appears to be displaying the title instead of the description. I'm using 1.4, however.

Edit: the title was actually from a separate element of the page (block title of a menu_block block)

The description field should now be available in the latest version of Drupal Core.
