CONTENT and ADVERTISING!

you shouldn't rely on users for content, you yourself should be posting content to get the site up and growing. Beyond that advertise.

Thank you for your input..so what kind of content should I use for a small community of EX-Loggers,Ex-nickel miners, few farms and ranchers?

Anonymous’s picture

What are their interests? Why are they ex-loggers and ex-nickel miners? Are there social issues that need to be addressed? Do you plan to foster and encourage political action? In short, what's your mission? I didn't pick up any clues as to the intended audience when I (very briefly) looked at your site.

Keep at it. Make your site into something that builds and supports the community, and I think you'll have success.

I haven't looked at the content because the theme is unattractive. The theme needs to attract me so that I'll stay long enough to actually check out the content.

Perhaps your content is not very comment worthy? I mean, not controversial or worth taking the time to discuss. People are very busy (time poor as we say), so unless your content is significantly compelling, generally users wont garner it the credence you afford your own prose...

Your writing style is a little to casual/vernacular for my taste. Frankly I have no idea what you are going on about sometimes due to the grammar and overuse of punctuation. If I can't understand it, I'm not going to bother reading it through and take the time to make a comment - yes?

Personally I found your site hard to read and somewhat confusing to navigate.

I'm not a big fan of the theme either - I've never thought Blue Marine was a great theme, especially with regards to readability.

Sorry to sound a little downbeat, but you did ask for feedback.

Thank You, yes I did ask and I appreciate your time.. and your answer.

Keith,

You described your users in terms that makes me think they probably don't spend a ton of time on social-networking sites. As a result, they might not be as familiar with the concepts you offer as we tend to assume as geeks. Maybe you should change your first page (especially for anonymous visitors) to describe what they can do there, how they can do it, and why they would want to. The latest posts, while important, might be better just as headlines to free up screen real estate.

Regarding your theme... Well, it is kind of grim. That stated, there appears to be truth to the saying "worse is better" online. Your site looks like a bit of a labor of love which can be endearing to users. Sometimes too smooth doesn't feel authentic. Look how many horrific sites running on vbulletin have huge traffic!

You might consider moving the Navigation block to the top left. I think that is a more intuitive place for users to expect to find that critical piece of the site.

Anyway, you're clearly working on the site and moving forward with it. It may also be a matter of time and consistently making the effort to grow it. How long has the site been running?

Keith2005’s picture

I'll try all of above, Sadly to say almost 2yrs ... I Really Appreciate your time and thought.

"How long has the site been running?"

Looks like a couple of years judging by the age of the posts in the forums. I always get depressed when I see sites like these because I'm doing the same thing with my site and worry that no one will ever use it.

That said, I have to agree with the others to get off bluemarine. And the nav menu on the top left is definitely more intuitive.

Beyond that, I'm here for the advice as well. My site isn't very old and I haven't really advertised it but I'm trying to get as many ideas as I can for when I do.

Keith & Michelle,

I don't know if you guys would be interested but I'm starting a group in Southern California to meet to discuss building online communities. You probably aren't in the neighborhood but I put up a quick Drupal site to plan the first meeting, etc. I don't know how much of the info in meetings will make it online but you are welcome to share your experiences on the site. Actually, if I had a couple people who aren't local it would incentivise me to make sure I do a decent job of documenting what happens offline. If you are ever in SoCal it would be great if you could attend a meeting to exchange ideas! The online address is www.communitybuildrs.com. If this message isn't appropriate let me know and I'll take it down right away! (Not sure about the netiquette for this situation...)

Your message is just fine. That sounds like an awesome group. Unfortunately a long drive from Wisconsin, but I'd love to keep up with what you put online. I bookmarked the page. You might also consider a notice http://groups.drupal.org/social-networking-sites as well.

Thanks!

Michelle
