Set default to publish nodes automatically [#1443406]

I feel like this should be a simple setting that I'm missing somewhere, but how do I set the default such that a feed will publish imported nodes automatically, instead of leaving them as unpublished?

I may be misunderstanding your question, but I think that you need to do this in the content type that feeds is importing into, not in feeds itself.
You should look at the content type edit screen and check that the "publishing options" have a check next to "Published" under default options.
