Hi,
I turned on the "Allow creation of new terms" previously, but right after i turned off this function, i see an empty selection after the first selection (for every sublevel-1).

Drupal core 6.24
Hierarchical Select 6.x-3.8

6.x issue without activity for over 3 years, closing.

Please reopen if this is still an issue in 7.x.
