Freetagging vocabs can get quite large, and make the settings page for taxonomy_defaults take forever to load and process.

I think you should consider disabling the feature for freetag vocabs - or maybe (even better), provide a different interface (autocomplete textfield ?) to pick a term in those vocabs.

A very good idea, which makes a nice interface as well.
