Just wanted to let people know that some of the sessions from DrupalCon Denver 2012 are starting to appear online.

Sorry but I Don't know an official download source for the DrupalCon videos. I thought Blip.tv had a download option also, but I can't find it. That was one of the things I liked about using Archive.org. They let you either stream or download.

Maybe someone can make torrents of the videos. Either individually or even by track. Lullabot did it one year

I remember blip.tv having download option but it is no more seen in their website. Maybe they removed the feature. Anyone else able to provide a downloadable link to the videos?

MacRonin, do you know how to make this thread visible to the volunteers who made the recordings? are you one of them? (see comment below by kentbye) Quicker we could make these videos available on archive.org the better... as the longer it takes, the information becomes more stale.

Sorry @krishworks, I have no special powers/connections. I am just a user who made this post when I saw the session videos staring to come up on Blip.tv

My best guess for reaching the Denver volunteers would be a post on the conf site. But as you mention it's been a while so they might not be looking that often

It looks as though Blip.tv has disabled the ability to download videos. They only want to have videos downloadable from either iTunes, Miro or gPodder because they want to ensure that their ads are supported through some of these players.

Here's a thread with more info, and a response from Blip saying:

We do not allow playback outside of the Blip player and are taking more aggressive actions towards limiting this behavior as it causes excessive bandwidth usage and many times is used by accounts to circumvent our ad network in favor of their own.

Another new problem is that Blip.tv has also eliminated any shows from their search index unless they have ads, and perhaps ads above a certain threshold of revenue. If you try searching for any variation of DrupalCon Denver, then you will not find any results: http://blip.tv/search?q=drupalcondenver or http://blip.tv/search?q=drupalcon+denver

In fact, none of the individual sessions are listed in their search index either. EFF Drupal CiviCRM Great is a pretty distinct search phrase that turns up nothing in Blip: http://blip.tv/search?q=EFF+Drupal+CiviCRM+Great

However, it is indexed by Google: https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#q=EFF+Drupal+CiviCRM+Great&fp=1&bav=o...

That means that even if you try to use something like Miro, then you won't be able to search and find either all of the sessions or any of the individual sessions.

I'd recommend mirroring the uploads to Archive.org if possible so that people could download or convert to MP3 versions. It looks like an individual has ripped a few sessions and posted audio versions already: http://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22DrupalCon+Denver%22

Thanks KentBye for more detailed responses. I completely agree with you that a copy of video files could be uploaded to archive.org which allows downloading rather than locking in with a commercial service like blip.tv which doesn't even list the videos in their search index.

While Archive.org is a good safe haven for these videos, why would we ignore the 3rd most visited site on the internets? If we're interested in spreading Drupal love, why hide it on lesser trafficked sites?

And I'm still trying to wrap my head around why intelligent web developers/designers like ourselves cannot figure out a way to download these videos even if there is no blatant download link.

Whoops, I posted the text below not realizing I was fighting a Chrome bug that prevented me from seeing any blip.tv videos. Watching them with IE or Firefox works fine. I'm leaving this message just in case someone else has the same issue.

If I try and view any of these videos on Blip I get the message "Sorry, this episode is temporarily unavailable."

I don't know if there is a problem with the recordings or blip or the transfer to blip, but the videos I watched so far are unnaturally bright. When the speakers are showing slides it's usually not a problem and you might not even notice it, but once they demonstrate something on a drupal installation, not only can't you read the text, but you often can't even tell that there even is text on the screen, because it's almost completely white.

Can anybody with access to the source videos verify if that's a problem with the videos themselves (the recording) or if something went wrong during the transfer to blip?

I tested that with watching the videos at blip as well as with mplayer2 and vlc (not that this would make a difference, but I still tested it and tried to play with brightness/saturation, but there is really nothing you can do to improve the situation).
