Could someone point me towards documentation on how to get started creating a multilanguage Drupal site? I've already tried http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/locale with no joy. Do I need more than just the core locale module?

- If not, how do I use locale to switch languages and provide multi-lingual content?

- If so, which modules should I be using: i18n, localization, other, all ...

Localizer module is what you need!

Localizer allows translation of the following system objects:
* Blocks
* Menus
* Nodes
* Taxonomy
* System settings (variables)

It's promising since it sounds like its working for you.

How does it stack up against core locale? contributed i18n/internationalization? I guess I'm looking for 'how do they fit together' and does Drupal support multi-lingual sites out-of-the-box?

Dear Ulf,
"Localizer module has been inspired from internationalization module (i18n)", Roberto Gerola says.
It is a different module from Internationalization but it depends on Locale.
It requires Locale, Menu, Taxonomy modules.

Found some pointers at http://drupal.org/node/150429 and http://groups.drupal.org/files/DrupalTranslationReport-1.4.pdf.

So is my understanding correct that locale is only for UI translations, and either localizer or i18n are required for content translation?

Hi Ulf,

Just responding to your email to me. at http://chla-absc.ca, I didn't manage to create the bilingual (en/fr) site with just locale, but did use i18n as well. I still find it a challenge - sometimes I can create French content, working in the English locale, but sometimes I need to switch to French in order for things to fall into place. I'm still very much a newbie with this. I did manage to get it mostly working with the pointers at http://drupal.org/node/67817 , but it took a while. I may take a closer look at localizer, although I wonder if I'm too far into i18n to switch now...

@nimazuk, I've opted for your suggestion of using localizer. I played with both localizer (http://drupal.org/project/localizer) and i18n (http://drupal.org/project/i18n), and have opted for the former mostly because of better documentation.

I quickly switched from localizer to i18n. Question for other users of the i18n module - the comments are language specific, is there a way to display all comments, regardless of their language?

Could you explain why you ended up preferring the internationalization module to localizer? What has your experience been since yout post and what do you recommend to users who are making the decision today?
