The thumbnails are produced, and in the node edit form I can see and select them — but in the view I created to show the video thumbnail (created by image style), the thumbnails are "access denied".

Everything works fine only if public filesystem is selected.

I have implemented this in 7.x-2.x. Be careful when updating to this new version because it contains a lot of changes. Read the release notes and the change record before you update.
