This function is not available in Simplenews and it is not foreseen to be included.
If others find this function useful, please feel free to re-open this issue.

There is a module called Newsletter Checkbox which does this -- but only for externally hosted newsletters, using services like Campaign Monitor. It would be great if it could somehow be modified to work with SimpleNews.
