I came across this error however with entities it could be because something is supplying the wrong info. and not the code in display suite however I've made a patch that will make this error go away.

I'm not fully up on the requirements of entities and what "should be the case" so this certainly needs a review from someone who is.

Hrm, in theory the plugin shouldn't only be used in entity contexts, however, it's possible to use the filter in other situations as well, so it makes sense to check on the data. Committed and pushed to both branches. Welcome to the committers list :)
