parse uri to imce

is there a way I can parse an uri to imce so that when a user clicks a hyperlink that is on a separate page, IMCE page opens in a new tab and 'drills-down' to the specific location that is reference by the uri in the hyperlink?

I see that I can set the default value for the available locations for specific 'roles', so I would assume there is a way to change that 'on-the-fly' by parsing a uri, but I guess I just need some direction to get started.
