According to your report $object contains 'heartbeat_activity' at this point, but $vars['heartbeat_activity'] does not exist apparently.

Could you add the following line just above line 966 of ds.module and then log in? This will output debug information on the screen. Please save the output in a .txt file and attach it to this issue. After you've done this, make sure to remove the line again.

Can you explain how to reproduce this?
Which version of heartbeat do you use? (since I remember there was an issue on the entity's name not being found)

The HeartbeatActivity object can be found in $vars['elements']['#heartbeat_activity'] and $vars['message'] in the debug output of comment #2.

Here is a patch. Can you test if this solves the problem for you? I have not tested it myself.

This is a workaround and it would be better if this is fixed in the Heartbeat module, they could do this without much damage to existing implementations by supplying a copy of the object in $vars['heartbeat_activity'].

I tried this patch and got this error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in drupal7/sites/all/modules/ds/ds.module on line 1391

Pages wouldn't render at all.

Just a note, I have played with the heartbeat module for a few hours about a week ago trying to reproduce this problem but I was unable to. Some more information on how to replicate it would be appreciated.

I've been running into this problem, myself. I can reproduce this error by creating a 'full content' display for a node type or 'user account view' and then creating a block field with heartbeat block. I realized that this is definitely not a display suite issue, but rather it's a heartbeat problem. I'm not familiar with creating entities, but it has something to do with how it feeds $vars into the display suite module.

I don't really understand the steps you're are suggesting in #9. I don't have any problems here. I debugged in ds and I see

I'm also having this issue.

I have two tabs at the user account area:
1. User Activity
2. User Relations Activity

If I navigate to the my account area and click either of these tabs, it renders without error. When I click on the other tab this is the error I receive:

Notice: Undefined index: heartbeat_activity in ds_entity_variables() (line 965 of /home/communit/public_html/sites/all/modules/ds/ds.module).

It doesn't matter which order I do this in, it's always the second click that results in error.

Also of note: in further testing...after I click on one of these, it does not matter where I navigate to, even if it's the home page etc., the error then comes up.

Hope this helps in troubleshooting.

After upgrading DS, I had the problem too. In heartbeat I switched all the "message" properties in the preprocessing to "heartbeat_activity".
You'll need to clear cache to see results.

Really dumb question, and my apologies in advance...Where do I navigate to to switch the message properties that you've outlined? At quick glance, I didn't notice any settings, but I'm sure it's something boneheaded that I'm completely missing.

You don't need to switch anything (I did that in code cause DS expects the preprocess variable to be the exact name of the entity.
After a cache clear all, you should be fine. (and after pulling from git , or downloading next dev release ofcourse)

I just tried this and it has definitely solved the issue. No more error messages after installing and clearing cache.
