If something is wrong in the configuration, e.g. the upload path is not writable, the script kcfinder/css.php return an HTML page reporting an error instead of a CSS content.

Yep, I've got same issue. so I followed #1.
Download latest stable version: 2.51 from http://kcfinder.sunhater.com/download
copyt to sites/all/libraries/kcfinder folder... then it is working nicely.
