download a new 5.1 archive and insure you have ALL the necessary core files, including but not limited to, modules/taxonomy

maybe he removed taxonomy folder while wiping some other folders? Next recommendation is to use sites/all/modules folder as the folder to uncompress the module and play with them, without getting entangled with code modules in the modules folder.

In another thread (http://drupal.org/node/157445), he states the folder is there, my guess is that the files are missing from his folder, or something became corrupt upon upload of the taxonomy modules files.

You have "Taxonomy" module in your Core - Optional list on the modules page. If you are unable to find it out, just tick the forum module and press submit. It should prompt you for dependency(i.e. Taxonomy module), and asking you to proceed(auto enables taxonomy module as well) or cancel.

I have done anything that you said, but it still shows the messages taxonomy missing
But taxonomy is there and i can use it. But on the modules page of admin it says it is missing

But one thing I might have done is that forum is missing off the menus page and I think I might have deleted this or disabled this on the menus page. As I cannot admin a forum as i am only one guy, so I thought that I didn't need it.

is it possible to mod the database so that it returns???

or can I rebuild drupal but still keep the content (I have got that much content and would rather do it now rather than later

been reading about the bugs when using this module and I dont want to keep running into problems. plus I want to use community clouds module and such that use the taxonomy core module. Can i tweak the database so that taxonomy works again

Until the problem is diagnosed, Not sure what you think "tweaking" the DB will do.

But, manually go into your DB and check out the system table, look for taxonomy there, is it set to 1 ?

I am such a idiot, well the problem was that I have a bad upload of the modules in the module folder and it uploaded the folders two times so that it was folders and then thought the folders was files as well so I just deleted the false files and so it was sorted.

thanks for the advice guys

I am a newbie allright, but there is something that seem to be beyond any logic.
Drupal says taxonomy module is missing, but it is there. I even reuploaded it.
I have installed Drupal using the fantastico installer. Everything seemed allright till I wanted to install tagadelic... both thismodule and the forum mdule cannot be activated because the taxonomy is missing (also the module page says the comment module is missing too)
Any suggestion?

The "Image" module causes taxonomy and comments to be disabled...

Gotcha. You can't have a copy of taxonomy.module anywhere in the sites/ folder ... rename it to taxonomy.module.bak and things work again.
